First off I wanna start with its main flaw for me. I considered myself an amateur audiophile before this iPod and after using this iPod for about 2 1/2 months, I can say I guess I'm not too huge on sound quality, the reason I say this is because the sound quality is pretty good but bass a big issue. I've noticed that on some really bass-y songs, especially hip hip songs, the bass will crack and it almost seems that the iPod struggles to maintain control of the sound when it does. However, there are some bass parts, I assume the lower mids, that actually sound absolutely amazing, for example: Wreath by Opeth actually sounds fantastic and the bass is loud and clear all throughout. Now that I've gotten my main issue out of the way, I'll move on to my pros.
Despite the bass cracks, the audio quality is actually very high end. Most of my songs are 256 kbps VBR AAC files or 320 kbps MP3 files. These sound amazing considering that 256 VBR AAC is actually the encoding that Apple iTunes uses with their music, but I have a bit of music that consists of 160 kbps MP3s, 192 kbps mp3s, and even 128 kbps MP3s, which I refuse to go lower from, and they all sound good. I use different sets of headphones which are Skullycandy: Riffr in-ear headphones (which I personally recommend for this particular iPod because it seems to cut out the bass cracks. How cool!), Marshall Major on-ear headphones (which sound surprisingly well with the iPod) and Audio-Technica M40x over-ear headphones(which are by far my favorite headphones I've ever used). All of these headphones bring out the device's true capabilities, making me love the iPod more and more with every listen. I generally listen to all music: metal and its various subgenres, some rock, hip hop, acoustic, a bit of jazz, which it's eq is similar to that of rock, and some electronic music. Each one of these genres sound amazing if using a good eq because I just can't stand a flat eq. However, the iPod alone seems to really bring out a "truer" sound to what your listening to, making it sound a bit organic or "warm" like most people call it.
The user interface is by far my favorite of any iPod or Apple product that I've used. So simple to navigate and easy to understand. All files are where they should be. Although, I've noticed that when an artist has a songs in which another artists is featured, the song will pop up as a separate artists as opposed to just showing up the primary artist. Although I know how to fix this, I wish I wouldn't have to go through the trouble of doing so. Folders are filed correctly in alphabetical order. One can customize the main menu, music menu, etc. to their liking, which is convenient for those who use certain features more than others. Charging speed is very quick and this baby can last up to 3 days without a charge. Notice I didn't say "3 FULL days" because I have not let it play out for 3 days straight because I pause and play whenever I need or want to, which ultimately lasts me for 3 days without a charge. I'm very careful as to how long I charge it because I do not plan on messing up the battery any time soon.
Although the the review may seem like I have it 5 stars by accident, I didn't. This product definetly deserves all 5 stars as it has never failed on me. It has never glitched on me, it has never stopped playing music out of no where, it has never skipped a song with a small drop (considering it's hard drive based memory), it has never made me regret buying it in the first place. I love this iPod and with the right care and protection, you will too. Buy this iPod while its at this price because it's sure to go up with time.
p.s. Thank you to The iPod Experts (seller I bought it from) for the amazingly refurbished iPod and for the speedy shipping (got it the day before my birthday) 😄
What issues did I have previously? My iPod Classic 6th generation skipped songs constantly. It would get maybe halfway through the first verse, just enough so you really started to get into a song, then it would skip to the next song. I never knew when it was going to play a full song or not. The same MP3 files played perfectly on every other device I have: Logitech Squeezebox, TiVo Premieres, iTunes on Windows PCs, Android smartphones, and more.
I am happy to report that I have not experienced the skipping problem with the Apple iPod classic 160 GB Black (7th Generation). It works far better than the previous version and so far has been as stable as my old 3rd generation iPod was.
You might wonder what features drove me back to iPod even though I really wanted a something that was not an Apple product. Much as I hate to admit it, Apple's iPod and iTunes products have their rivals beat in regards to playlists. No one else does playlists as well as Apple does. In other products, playlists seem to be largely manual. In iTunes, you can create smart playlists that automatically update with new songs that match the rules you set in that smart playlist. For instance, I set up playlists for my favorite artists if the song has at least 3 stars. You can also set up smart playlists based on the date of the song and more. These smart playlists transfer to the iPod where you can enjoy them while mobile. Of course, you can set up manual playlists as well, but the smart playlist is the feature that made me come back to iPod.
Another thing I like is that this music player has so much storage. My digital music collection is about 40 GB now. I don't want to have move songs on and off of my player - I prefer to keep my entire collection on the MP3 player. The 160 GB iPod Classic has room for my entire collection with plenty of room to grow and can even accommodate videos if I want it to.
This iPod also works with my old accessories, namely my FM transmitter for the car so I can play it through my car speakers. My car stero doesn't have an audio port, so this is a big plus for me.
As I said before, I am not an Apple fan by any means, and prefer to buy from their competition whenever possible, but even I have to admit that Apple still makes the best digital music software and hardware.
