Product Description

The Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt with Century Trim in Satin Nickel makes daily life easier and more convenient. Enter an access code on the touchscreen to unlock the door instead of searching your pockets for keys. Pair the lock with your smartphone over Bluetooth . Share access with trusted friends and family with just a few taps in the Schlage Sense app – no more keeping track of spare keys. The Schlage Sense lock is easy to install yourself in minutes. It’s battery operated so there’s no hardwiring required, and the lock will still accept access codes if the power goes out at home. Typical battery life with average use is about one year, and the low battery indicator reminds you weeks in advance to replace it. You can update the lock wirelessly through the app as new features are released, which means you never have to buy a new lock to take advantage of the latest capabilities. Add the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter (sold separately) to your home Wi-Fi network to lock/unlock from anywhere on Android smartphones, iPhone , iPad or iPod touch . Or, if you have an iPad /Apple TV connected to your home Wi-Fi network, you can control the lock from your iPhone as part of your HomeKit-enabled smart home.

Great lock so far

Great lock so far
I've been waiting for this to come out for a while, and I'm thinking it might of been worth the wait. Aside from a few problems with the installation, it's working great overall. The problems: My door's previous lock wasn't in the configuration location needed, so I had to redrill the main hole, which is fairly easy if you have an door hole drilling tool from Home Depot. Also, because there is two pieces for the strike lock, the thickness was greater than the existing one, so I had to do some wood working on the door to get the depth correct so the door would close, which took a little while. Bottom line if your door doesn match the presets, you are going to have a fair amount of work to do before you get started installing the lock. The Last problem that occurred was during installation. You are supposed to match the tab from the outside of the keypad to the housing on the inside. It's supposed to be a P facing up, but mine was a P facing down. I checked other forums on the Schlage connect and it seemed like when this occurs that your piece was no good and had to be replaced. at this point I called it a night and waited till the next day to talk to customer service. Customer service was nice, and told me to turn the knob really hard until you hear a mechanical sound and see the knob rotate to the right position. The suggestion immediately solved the issue. This was contrary to the instructions that stated if their is a problem with alignment you may need to start over, and there was no mention of turning it until it aligned. A little clearer instructions would be nice. Now that it is installed, it is working great! Programming codes on the phone were very easy, and Siri connected to HomeKit and can open or close the door from in my house. I wasn't aware that an Apple TV would be required for opening and closing the door remotely since I preordered this two months ago before much was released on the product, so I guess I'll be picking one of those up soon. Overall, aside from the the installation work and clarity of the instructions, the lock is working great.

I don't get the hate that a lot of people seem to have with this lock. It works exactly as described.

There are several options to using this lock:

    1) Manually adding codes without using the a smartphone app -- I'm not sure why anybody would pay for this lock and stick with this option, as the "smart" part of the lock will essentially be disabled, but it's nice to know it's an option.

    2) HomeKit using an Apple TV as a hub -- This is my setup and it works very well. This option is available for anyone who has a 3rd generation Apple TV and up (I use the 4th gen) -- if you don't know what generation you have, google search the model number on the back or underside of the device. This is probably the easiest way to set this lock up for people who use everything Apple. I have my Apple TV on one end of my 1,000 square foot condo and the lock on the other end. The lock "sees" the Apple TV just fine. There has never been a connectivity issue. Setting up required little tech know-how, as Apple has made the process very breezy. I have many options on how to use the lock: Siri, HomeKit app, Schlage Sense app, manually entering codes, etc. I usually manually enter codes to enter my place as it's the fastest route. But pulling out my phone to say, "hey Siri, unlock my front door" is pretty painless. My favorite part of using the apps to manage the lock is remote access to the lock. I can manually lock, unlock, assign codes, disable codes, all from the Schlage Sense app as long as I have an internet connection -- all of this without a subscription fee that other smart lock manufacturers charge. I love it.

    3) HomeKit using an iPad as a hub -- Again, mostly for Apple product users. I tried this a bit just to see how well it worked, but I switched back to the Apple TV since the Apple TV will always be home and plugged in. It works just like the Apple TV option, and set up is a breeze. It's pretty much streamlined and easy thanks to the HomeKit set up process being straightforward.

    4) Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter option -- I have not tried this option out, so I can't vouch for how well it works. This is the only way, I've read, to enable smart compatibilities using and Android device. This is an additional purchase unfortunately, but all IoT smart "things" require hubs or adapters, so it's not a big deal.

If you want to use another type of hub with the lock, currently you're out of luck. It only supports Apple TV, iPad, or the Wi-Fi adapter. The Schlage Connect lock is the lock you'll want to buy instead, if you want to use your Amazon Echo, Samsung SmartThings hub, etc.

    Overall Pros:
    * Fingerprint resistant, high quality surface covering the buttons. This is what makes this lock compared to others I've used. Some smart locks have a glossy LCD screen that you hover your hand over the panel, press a few random buttons which are prompted, then enter your code. Clunky. Not this one. You simply enter your code and it unlocks. There are no physical buttons to wear out, and since it's a matte nickel finish, you can't tell which numbers are frequently used.
    * Lots of connectivity options -- see above
    * Batteries are very easily replaceable
    * Battery life - I've used the lock now for about 4 months and I'm only down to 81% battery life. This is phenomenal. I'll likely only need to change the batteries once every 2 years or so. Your mileage may vary, of course, based on how often it's used and how well the cylinder is aligned.
    * HomeKit integration is fantastic

    Cons:
    * The thing is loud -- but the noise is hardly a factor in my like of the lock
    * The indoor part of the lock is bulky -- this doesn't bother me though
    * Not compatible with non-Apple or Schlage hubs (get the Schlage Connect for that)
    * I had an issue where all the doors in my condo used unusually long cylinders to have the handles and locks further away from the door frame. I ran into serious issues with getting this installed, since this lock was incompatible with my old cylinder. I had to drill a new hole for the lock and fill/patch the old hole in the door. But this is hardly Schlage's fault.

If you want a smart lock and own mostly Apple products, get this lock. You won't regret it.

Many of the reviewers here have complained of remote access issues. I have not experienced those issues so I write this review as a very satisfied purchaser. I bought two of these in Century Trim -- one in the nickel finish, one in the black finish. They both work exactly as advertised.

My first criterion in purchasing a smart lock was to find one that looked, felt, and worked as much like a traditional deadbolt as possible. I was concerned that the deadbolt portion (which houses the bluetooth and wifi radios as well as the battery compartment) would look too large and clunky. It does seem huge when you first unbox it, but the size doesn't bother me or my wife at all in practice. Both of my locks look great on their respective doors, and the mechanical operation is excellent. One note on this: Make absolutely sure that your installer lines up the hole and kickplate precisely so there is no drag when turning the thumb lock. If there is drag, auto-locking may fail and you will run down your batteries quickly.

Second, I wanted reliable keypad operation and Siri operation so that I never need a key. With one small glitch, I have both. After several months of use, the keypad has never failed to unlock my locks, which means I indeed do not need a key. This is an incredible convenience. I do recommend setting different security codes for all users, both for logging purposes (the app keeps a log) and to avoid telltale fingerprints on the keypad surface. I also have a 100% success rate with Siri. I don't use Siri as often as expected, but I have appreciated this in a couple of instances -- telling her when I pull into the garage to unlock the back door so I can just walk in and asking her at night whether the doors are locked. I don't entirely trust the latter to be definitive, but it has never failed me yet. The one glitch I have experienced, twice, is an error locking the door. In both of those instances, pressing the Schlage logo to quick-lock the door failed and the lock flashed a red "X." I'm not sure what happened, but the lock at least let me know that the requested operation failed.

Third, I was very attracted to the access control, and it has met expectations. For example, my babysitter's code works when she is working but does not work during hours she would not be at our house. When I hired a house painter, I gave him the ability to come and go as he wanted over a two day period but set his code to stop working after that. The possibilities are endless and I love this feature.

Those were my requirements. The possibility of remote access via HomeKit was a nice extra, but not something I couldn't live without. In fact, for me, this has worked nicely when I needed it -- for example, when I am at work miles away and need to give someone access. I understand others have had trouble with this feature and, while I haven't, I note that a lot of things need to be working just so for this feature to work. I recommend treating the remote features as "beta" for now -- they can be fantastic as they have been for me, but you probably shouldn't rely on them at this point in time.

Finally, I hope Schlage enhances the compatibility of these locks through firmware updates. At present, you need an iPhone to set codes and access (though anyone can use the codes once set). You also currently need an Apple TV for remote access, but you do not need this if you are just using the keypad or Siri via Bluetooth. It would be very nice if Schlage were to add support for Android devices (which I'm told may happen). Also, it would be cool if this lock could be an IFTTT trigger so that I could set lights (etc.) to turn on when I open the lock. Those wishlist items aside, this has been a very good purchase and one I would happily recommend to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really high quality lock but no wi fir connection
Reviewed in Australia on August 6, 2021
Took quite a bit of extra work installing in an aluminum frame and glass door. Needed many extra tools to cut the metal. Schlage offered nothing on working with metal doors. But once installed it works really well and looks very smart.
Downside. Amazon Australia website advertised a separate plug in unit for a big extra price but said it was needed to get full wi fi phone control of the lock. I paid the extra as a separate order. Very high delivery cost because as it turns out it had to come from the USA. Thu unit when it arrived is no use. USA plugs and rated to only 110 volts. seems it is not available in a 240 volt version. So no wi-fi which was advertised as a feature by Amazon Australia and why i chose this lock over others.
